E-BIKE Information

NEW ZEALAND E-BIKE LAWS

Every country has there own definition of what an e-bikes is. Most countries have a speed limit as well as a power limit. New Zealand e-bike laws state that the system must not exceed 300 watts. This is the only regulation (other than regulations that apply to all bikes). There is no speed limit for e-bikes in New Zealand and no restrictions on throttles, as long as the bike is primarily designed to be pedal assist. If the bike meets this requirement it can be ridden anywhere a non-powered bicycle can be ridden. This includes roads, cycle paths and mountain bike trails. If the bike is over 300 watts it can only be ridden on private property, unless it is registered and ridden as a moped.

Our bikes are all designed for New Zealand so have 300 watts and have no limiter on the assist speed. They are designed to be ridden as a pedal assist (5 power levels) but also have a throttle. The models differ as they have different wheel sizes but they will assist you up to approximately 35km/h on throttle only and around 55km/h on pedal assist.

REAR HUB-drive vs. mid-drive

Both hub-drive and mid-drive e-bikes perform well, as long as they power the rear wheel. There are advantages with either system depending on the use of the bike and the rider.

HUB-DRIVE: Because the power comes directly from the hub it does not matter what gear you are in, you will always get the same power. This also means less wear on the mechanical drive components (chain and gear system). Hub-drives are a less complicated motor which also makes it a cheaper option. This is generally a good option for a less experienced rider or someone who wants a cheaper option for the same quality.

MID-DRIVE: Because the motor runs though the gears and chain, there is potentially a wider range of power. This also means there is more wear on these components. It also means if you are in the wrong gear for your legs, you are also in there wrong gears for the motor. This type or bike has a standard rear wheel which is easier to manage if you need to remove it. This also means it is really the only option for an e-bike with rear suspension.
